The China (Sichuan)-Japan Economic and Trade Promotion and Sichuan Cuisine Tasting Is Successfully Held

On August 28, the “China(Sichuan)-Japan Economic and Trade Promotion and Sichuan Cuisine Tasting” organized by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province and Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce was successfully held in Hotel New Otani Tokyo. This event was attended by over 200 people including Yin Li, Deputy Secretary of CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Governor of Sichuan, Guo Yan, Charge d’Affaires of Chinese Embassy in Japan, Liu Xin, Director General of Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce, Hiroyuki Ishige, President of JETRO, members of the Sino-Japanese Economic Advisory Committee, and leaders of related institutions and companies. The promotion was hosted by Yu Bin, Deputy Director General of Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce.

Yin Li, Governor of Sichuan, led guests from China and Japan to visit the Sichuan Characteristic Exhibition Area. Wine, condiments, fancy lanterns, Sanxingdui, giant panda, the culture of the Three Kingdoms, as well as brilliant luster, rich history, delicious taste and easy life in Sichuan, excited the interest of guests and attracted them to stay.

At the promotion, Yin Li, Governor of Sichuan, delivered a speech entitled “Beautiful China, Tasty Sichuan”. He pointed out that this year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and open-up. As an inland province of China, Sichuan is implementing the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, expanding all-round open-up and cooperation, expediting the development of Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and International Airport New City, planning and developing “China (Sichuan) Japan Industrial Cooperation Park”. Sichuan welcomes Japanese companies to invest and operate in Sichuan. Anold Chinese saying goes like this, food is the paramount necessity of people. Japanese friends are interested in Sichuan’s history and culture, and the culture of the Three Kingdoms in particular. And the giant panda is also well loved in Japan. Hopefully, through today’s Sichuan cuisine tasting, Japanese friends will fall in love with Sichuan cuisines and with Sichuan. We welcome you to visit Sichuan and expand and deepen the Sino-Japanese friendship.

Liu Xin, Director General of Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce, introduced the characteristic Sichuan-style industries in Sichuan. He said that Sichuan is the “Land of Abundance”. With abundant natural resources and beautiful environment, it is business-friendly and livable. The transformational, innovative and leapfrog development of Sichuan breeds great market demands. The national strategies of west development, Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone, Tianfu New Area and China (Sichuan) Pilot Free Trade Zone overlap in Sichuan. Sichuan is making effort to develop RMB 5 trillion pillar industries including IT, food and beverages, energy and chemical engineering, equipment manufacture, and advanced manufacture, and put in place a digital economy “5+1” modern industrial system. It has vast potential for development. The time-honored history and culture of Sichuan has forged a group of Sichuan-flavored characteristic name cards including world-famous spicy Sichuan cuisine, fragrant Sichuan tea, full-bodied Sichuan liquor and pure Sichuan medicine. We hope to draw on the Sichuan flavor as the media to taste the flavor, talk about cooperation and seek win-win development.

Hiroyuki Ishige, President of JETRO, and Guo Yan, Charge d'Affaires of Chinese Embassy in Japan delivered speeches. Mr. Hiroyuki Ishige praised Sichuan as a very beautiful province. He said Sichuan cuisine was flourishing in Japan, and Sichuan pepper was well-sought-after. JETRO wishes to enhance exchanges and cooperation with Sichuan in food culture and promote shared prosperity. Ms Guo Yan said that not long ago Premier Li Keqiang visited Japan to promote the Sino-Japanese relations to get back on track. The economic and trade cooperation between Japan and China will thrive again. Sichuan is a place you never want to leave. We hope more Japanese companies seize the opportunities to invest and operate in Sichuan, injecting more positive energy into the Sino-Japanese relations. We hope the Sino-Japanese exchanges and cooperation could be as hot as the Sichuan cuisine. Tanaka Issei, Chief Representative of Chengdu Representative Office of JETRO introduced the business environment of Sichuan.

At the promotion, a grand agreement signing ceremony was held. 24 companies and institutions including Dongfang Electric Corporation organized a collective signing of 13 projects. These projects cover park cooperation, equipment manufacture, technological cooperation, fancy lantern exhibition, Sichuan cuisine condiments, etc., reflecting that the industrial cooperation between Sichuan and Japan is broadening.  

With the accompaniment of the Music and Dance of the Palace of Shu played by Sichuan Tianziguoyue Women’s Folk Music Troupe, the Sichuan cuisine tasting kicked off. The guests tasted the Sichuan-flavored cuisines cooked by Hotel New Otani guided by Mr. Chen Jianyi, Iron Chef and Sichuan Cuisine International Promotion Ambassador. This was also the first cooperation between Hotel New Otani and Sichuan Cuisine master. The famous Sichuan dish “Mapo Tofu” cooked by Mr. Chen Jianyi, found a good accompaniment in fragrant Sichuan liquor Wuliangye, and these two made a perfect match at the tasting.

This impressive promotion was praised by the guests. The rich Sichuan flavor and the broad market stimulated the love and longing for Sichuan among the Japanese circles. It will play a significant role in expanding the economic, trade and cultural cooperation between Sichuan and Japan.
